La Salle-Zobel earned temporary solo leadership of the UAAP Season 76 Juniors Basketball tournament with a victory over defending champions FEU-Diliman on Saturday morning at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Karl Maldinger made the game-winning free throws with 7.3 seconds left, capping an 11-1 run by the Junior Archers to end the game. Anchoring the comeback from eight points down with 109 seconds remaining was Arjun Melecio, who nailed three consecutive triples to give Zobel a 59-58 lead. Melecio finished with 19 points, while adding nine rebounds and five assists.
David Completo then split his charities to tie the game at 59, setting the stage for Maldinger's heroics. The Baby Tams had one final opportunity to win or force overtime, but were unable to get off an attempt in time.
Renzo Subido finished with a game-high twenty points for Zobel, while the defending champions were paced by JJ Domingo and Wendell Comboy, who each scored thirteen points.
The other game in the doubleheader featured Ateneo getting its first win in basketball this season for all divisions, as the Blue Eaglets beat the UE Pages, 71-64.
Thirdy Ravena scored sixteen points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Mike Nieto netted thirteen and twelve rebounds.
Magic Marata led the Pages with twenty points and ten rebounds, while adding twelve points is Reymar Caduyac.
Women's action resumes today at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan with a quadruple bill, with opening day winners going up against each other. The Tigresses and the Lady Archers face each other at 10:30am, while the Lady Tams face the Lady Bulldogs at noon.
