UPIS dispatches AdU in 4OTs

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons basically needed one more half to secure their first win this season, a marathon 89-87 quadruple overtime victory over the Adamson University Baby Falcons at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday morning.

Josiah Cruz scored eight of the Junior Maroons' final twelve points in the third and fourth OTs, including a triple with 2:07 left in the fourth overtime to give UPIS an 88-87 lead. Raymart Sablan would then add one more free throw with 83 seconds remaining for what turned out to be the final score.

The Baby Falcons started off strong, holding down the Junior Maroons to just 7 points in the first quarter. The combined efforts of Joseph Navarro, Lester Munsayac and Patrick Beltran allowed Adamson to erect a 17-point lead in the second quarter, before UPIS uncorked a 16-1 run spanning the end of the second quarter and the start of the 3rd. Sablan scored eight straight points in that stretch for the Allan Gregorio-coached team.

Froilan Jamias nailed a triple to seemingly quell the rally, but UPIS answered with an 11-1 run to retake the lead at 39-34 just before the end of the 3rd quarter.

Adamson would rely on Laer Nemenzo in the fourth, scoring ten points, aiding the Baby Falcons in securing a 53-48 lead with 3:21 left, but Sablan went off, scoring UPIS' last eight points, including the OT-forcing bucket with 9 seconds left at 56-all.

UPIS needed late game heroics to stave off defeat in the extra periods. Freddy Pajarillaga forced a second OT with a bucket with just five seconds remaining to make it 63-all. In the second OT, After Adamson put up a 72-68 lead with 2:35 left, Jozhua General scored eight of the next ten UPIS points in the following two minutes, before Allan Casino tied the game at 74 for Adamson with 21 seconds left to force a third OT. In that third OT, General nailed a triple with 2.1 seconds left to tie the game at 82, setting the stage for Chua's heroics in the fourth OT.

Allan Gregorio was pleased with the win, "It's a clear case of perseverance and trust in each other that gave us this sweet victory."

Sablan finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks in 52 minutes. Pajarillaga added 19 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out in the second OT. General netted 17 and 7 in 45 minutes.

The still winless Baby Falcons were led by Navarro, who scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. Reiner Quinga added 13 points, four blocks and a game-high 23 rebounds in a game-high 53 minutes.

The other Juniors game saw National University dominate the University of Santo Tomas, 81-56, to join La Salle-Zobel as the only unbeaten teams so far this season at 3-0.

A 22-4 run that spanned the second and third quarters made an eight-point NU lead into a 26-point bubble that UST could not fully extricate themselves out of.

Hubert Cani almost had a triple-double with the Bullpups, with 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, while Paolo Corre led the Tiger Cubs with 20 points and four rebounds.

Juniors action will resume later today at the Mall of Asia Arena, with both NU and Zobel seeking to maintain their unblemished records against separate opposition. The Bullpups face the University of the East Pages at 8am, while the Junior Archers will face the Tiger Cubs at 10am.
