FIBA has suspended the Lebanese Basketball Federation, after local parties were unable to resolve their impasse as of the deadline that FIBA imposed on them on Friday.
The impasse is rooted on the legal actions taken on a playoff series in the Lebanese Basketball League, with both parties unable to provide a proper resolution on this matter (even with the involvement of the Lebanese Ministry of Youth and Sports), FIBA made the decision to put the federation under suspension.
The suspension means that Lebanon cannot participate in any FIBA-endorsed competition, including the Jones Cup, which they are currently involved in. (They had just suffered a 69-67 loss to Jordan, to put their record at 2-4 and with two more games to play against the US and Iran.)
As a result of the suspension, Iraq will be replacing Lebanon in Group B of the FIBA-Asia Championships to be held in Manila in less than three weeks (a tournament that Lebanon was supposed to host), which has the teams from Qatar, Hong Kong and Japan. The top three teams of Group B will join the top three teams of Group A (which includes the Philippines) to form Group E in the second round.
