Ravena and Newsome lead way in first set of Premier Cup awards

From Yahoo! Ph
A stalwart and an incoming impact player from the defending UAAP Champions highlight the first set of weekly awards that were given out for the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.

Kiefer Ravena was named as the initial Master Best Player of the Week, garnering 209 statistical points in their four matches against guest team Southwestern University, NCAA sides San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Emilio Aguinaldo College, and the UAAP's University of Santo Tomas. He averaged 16.5 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and almost one block during that span.

Kiefer's teammate Chris Newsome was named as the first Gatorade Defensive Player of the Week. The Fil-Am from New Mexico averaged almost 9 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Blue Eagles, who went 3-1 in the first week of action.

He finished second to Kiefer in the BPoW, adding almost 13 ppg and over 3 apg.

The two are among those being counted on to play a major role for new head coach Bo Perasol in helping to fill the huge holes left by Greg Slaughter, Nico Salva, Justin Chua, Tonino Gonzaga and Oping Sumalinog in Ateneo's quest for a sixth straight UAAP men's basketball title.

Joining Ravena and Newsome as the top five players in statistical points, dubbed the Gatorade Best Five, are Ateneo's Von Pessumal (11ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1 apg) and San Beda's Ola Adeogun (13ppg, almost 10rpg and 1apg) and Art dela Cruz (almost 8ppg, almost 11 rpg, 2 apg).

Adeogun and dela Cruz, who are fourth and third in the DPoW results, helped the reigning NCAA champions to a 2-1 record in the Premier Cup.

The statistical points race is technically skewed towards Ateneo and San Beda as of the moment, with both teams playing more games than anyone in the competition. Incoming La Salle newcomer Jason Perkins (at 9th) is the only one in the top ten that is neither from the Blue Eagles or Red Lions. Ten Ateneans comprise the top-20 in statistical points, compared to six Bedans, four La Sallians and two Thomasians.
