Awesome poster for USA vs Mexico WCQ.

In just over a week, Columbus will be rocking for the Hexagonal World Cup Qualifier match between the current frontrunners United States against a Mexico side currently struggling with form. I posted it here because I got to say that the poster is awesome. The man who designed this is Brent Rollins, whom possibly some Filipinos may have seen do some stuff for Status here in the Philippines.

Could be a song to groove to with this video.

h/t to SI's Grant Wahl for directing me to this nice masterpiece.

Blog Outsourcing 7/4 edition

Welcome to the latest edition of The Victory Formation.

I want to wish every single American I know a happy Independence Day. Remember this line:

Just when you think about the Fourth of July, you think about fireworks and similar stuff like that. Then again, in Ohio, there is a new way to celebrate in the clubs. This comes too late for Plaxico Burress, as it would have better for him to have played with the Cleveland Browns or the Cincinnati Bengals instead of the Giants.

Luis Suarez and his moral compass

I was not able to watch this in full, but this happened in the quarterfinal game between Africa's last man standing and (unknowingly for the Uruguayans) the eventual last South American team standing in the semifinals.

Yup, this match featured the handball dubbed as the new version of the original "Hand of God," this time not to secure a win but to save themselves from one. Obviously, it was an automatic red card that would suspend him for the semifinals. Ironically, that game will be against the Netherlands, the country of Ajax Amsterdam, where Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez (and midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro) plays his club football. Luis also serves as its captain. This weirdly would avert an Ahn Jung Hwan scenario that occurred back in 2002.

This is what he said after the match:
"I think I made the best save of the World Cup,"

"It's difficult to be sent off at a World Cup. It's complicated," said the high-scoring Suarez, who left the field in tears. "But the way in which I was sent off today — truth is, it was worth it."
The question of whether he deserved suspension that is more than a game is unwarranted. According to FIFA guidelines, automatic red cards equate to next game suspension which can be reviewed under certain circumstances to determine if it can be extended. FIFA did review the situation and decided the suspension was enough.

The handball elicited philosophical and ethical thoughts on whether it was right to do the call. Sure, a lot of prognosticators and observers slammed Suarez, I am sure if they were in the situation, they'll exactly do the same thing. It is an instinctive thing that Suarez did. A decision that had to be done and done quickly. as what he said, he sacrificed himself for the team and for the country. What nobility can you ask for (even if it was an illegal act)?

Note that I used illegal, not immoral. The circumstances forced Luis' hand (no pun intended). He knew the consequences and accepted it wholeheartedly. And now, Uruguay have a new lease of life.

Blog Outsourcing 7/5

Welcome to today's edition of Sparty & Friends.

It's a Holiday weekend on the American shores, and although it is Filipino-American Friendship Day here (the US did grant Philippine independence on July 4, 1946), most of the country is reporting for duty. I am luckily taking advantage of the fact that I have no work later today. (You can thank the outsourcing industry).

After the so-called debacle of an intro last week, it is time to write something interesting. Something way way late. The final-postscript of the NBA Finals. I did write about what I thought were the factors were in the series. And to recap, here they are:

The X-Factors:

1. Andrew Bynum - Restricted to minimal minutes due to the injury. Then again, Pau and Lamar best play alongside each other.

2. Ron Artest - need I say more after Game 7?

3. Kendrick Perkins - His absence in Game 7 is a major what-could-have-been. It also ensure that the KG-Perk-Pierce-Allen-Rondo starting 5 remains unbeaten in a playoff series.

4. The Boston Bench (Big Baby Davis, Nate Robinson, Tony Allen, Rasheed Wallace) - Did win them a game (the Shrek and Donkey game a.k.a. the saliva moment). Did nothing in Game 6. Was not in play in Game 7 (Sheed was in starting 5).

The Keys:

1. Kobe - Definitely not his best day. Tony Allen will get paid because of his efforts chasing Kobe. Ray Allen also did admirably, but apparently took a toll on his shooting.

2. KG - He was okay with his performance in the Finals. Definitely not at par with 2008 level, but he kept things going for Boston.

3. Rondo - Lakers found a cure, somewhat to the Rondo. Letting him shoot. Let's put it this way, I hope he shoots 500 jumpers everyday or have Ray Allen's habits rub off him.

Anyhow, now that this is out of the way, we can close the book on the previous season. As what Jay-Z says, on to the next one.

Since it is after all, Independence Day, people should remember this speech well:

Time to check the links:

Joe Johnson is about to be officially overpaid.

The Knicks arranged a second meeting with Lebron's team. Why have a second meeting? Because of this guy.

Maybe J-Rod has this shirt.

This is why the FA process takes a bit long. Meanwhile, this might factor into the Wade for Chi-town.

Miz loves spreadsheets. I am sure he would like Google Documents.

Another Spanish guard goes back to Europe. From Raul Lopez to Juan Carlos Navarro to Sergio Rodriguez.

Russian Billionaire seeks GM, checks if Chris Paul could possibly be packaged along in the future. But that might be wishful thinking.

David Lee visiting Minnesota. Could be part to get Monta Ellis to Rucker Park. Speaking of Rucker Park, streetballer named Yungbuck found ballin'.

It has been one year for Air McNair.

Dunga exits. But Felipe Melo should be given a reprieve by Brazilian fans after a FIFA correction. Oh, and don't do an Andres Escobar.

What now, Diego?

This letter might bring back the Nigerians to their senses.

Miroslav Klose thinks Die Mannschaft can pull it off this time against the Euro Champs. He's a goal away from tying the old Ronaldo's record.

All-Star Rosters have been announced. Discuss. Why there will probably be 4 DH games in the World Series.

Deuce Lutui is now (proud to be) an American.

Kevin Ollie is no longer in the FA race. Ditto with Donyell Marshall.

Serena is the queen on grass, while Rafa is its king.

Bill Clinton Attends USA vs Algeria World Cup Game

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton attended the USA vs Algeria World Cup Game in South Africa on Wednesday June 23rd, 2010. Clinton is known world-wide for his political and philanthropic endeavors and it was very likely that he would attend something as culturally diverse as a World Cup game. However, there might be another reason that he attended the game. Clinton could be putting in face time and doing his homework since he recently became one of the latest additions to the World Cup Bid Committee Board of Directors along with his top advisor, Doug Band.

Clinton has joined the World Cup Committee Board of Directors in hopes of bringing the World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022. The last time the World Cup was hosted in USA it became the largest attended single sporting event in US history – 3.6 million. Interesting enough, back in 1994 soccer wasn’t really even that popular in the US and they still managed to capture a record audience. With the way soccer has gained popularity and continues to pick up momentum throughout the country, one can only imagine how big a US hosted World Cup would be 8 or 12 years from now. There would be no doubt about the economic benefits that would ensue, bringing tons of revenue into the country. More importantly, the relationship that the US has with foreign countries could strengthen significantly.

Bill Clinton has worked on the forefront of the US mission to increase foreign relations through the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). CGI brings world leaders together to help solve world problems. CGI was actually co-founded by Doug Band, who attended Georgetown Law and worked as an aide for Clinton throughout his Presidency; now serving as his top counselor post-presidency. The CGI to date has brought benefits to thousands of people across hundreds of countries. Undoubtedly, the US will hope that their chances of winning the World Cup Bid will increase with the face of Bill Clinton and Doug Band on the committee. Band actually happens to be a big soccer fan. Perhaps the next time we see him he’ll be attending a World Cup game, regardless of whether or not USA is playing. He might even be there now.

Welcome to today's edition of the TMA.

Recently, it was the 112th anniversary of the Philippine Declaration of Independence. Yes, we freed ourselves from Spanish occupation. Then again, under the treaty of Paris, the Americans took over control until 1946.

Imagine if we became Americans, too. Oh, that would be an interesting what-could-have-been. Then again, I love my country.

Oh, here is a picture of an interesting situation during the World Cup. Our football team is crap, but this was awesome. Thanks to that guy.

Here are the links:

The German machine at work.

Slovenia take advantage of a Robert Green. America, meet your opponent on Friday. Speak of Robert Green...

Africa has something to celebrate. So far, a 1-1-2 record.

Meanwhile the Dutch are getting ready. So are the Azzurri. Will Samuel Eto'o secure Africa's 2nd win?

English television has some similarities with American ones, too.

He says it is not the ball's fault. Actually, he is right. The Algerian goalkeeper should have handled that. So should Robert Green.

Meanwhile, the African version of the cowbell to get the kibosh?

Another great pitching gem. Credit the Stanley Cup for that one.

Guess who's back on top...

For a last-place team, they get lots of buzz. Guess 19Ks get you something. Oh, this might interest someone...

Last ditch effort... Speaking of Longhorns, nothing ever goes right when it is 330am.

Boston withstands a Kobe going nova moment and an off-kilter Rondo.

This is for the Celtics.

Blog Outsourcing 6/7

Welcome to the newest edition of Sparty and Friends.

Today is June 7. At this time of the year, it would be the first day of school. A new school year. Where people are giddy for allowances, scared of teachers and nervous about the uncertain. The true fun for me came a bit late, in college, where it was always fun. Yes, that university Sparty highlighted in one of the comments. College made it fun. High school for me was focused on academics and not much on the trivial stuff. Makes me wonder what could have been. Then again, if I hadn't had the academic chops, I would not be able to withstand the academic rigors of my alma mater.

Today is the day Daniel Boone discovered what is currently Kentucky. The day before, it was D-Day. All I know is that June is one special month. It should be for everyone.

Here are the links:

The Blackhawks are one game away from Lord Stanley. But like what has been the norm, still overshadowed.

Who overshadowed Lord Stanley? The glam of the NBA Finals, where Boston secured the split. Rondo took over when Jesus Shuttlesworth was done shooting the **** out of Staples.

Oh and here is Kareem and Bill on Coach.

Can Dan Gilbert really snatch Tom Izzo over Sparty's dead body?

I am sure Trey has more details on Pac-10 becoming the new Southwest Conference. Meanwhile, Boise State mulls over a move. You know, all of this can be avoided really if South Bend joins the Big Televen.

Rafael Nadal is back where he belongs, as the master of Roland Garros.

The Lombardi Trophy has a new job, to uplift people's lives.

Ubaldomania goes on and on....

Yankees relied on Javy Vasquez to avert a sweep. Who knew? Meanwhile Rays keep in step while the Sawx gift one to Juan Samuel.

This Mike Stanton might make us forget the old Mike Stanton. Meanwhile, everybody is waiting for this version of Super Tuesday.

Oddly enough, I still remember him as a player.

Greece not getting good press lately. This does not help matters. Talk about partisan fans.

A soccer stampede? Not a good sign. At least it is insured. Here's a good sign for the Elephants.

What's up with England? A warm-up. Another World Cup injury, this time for the Dutch. And sometimes, one has to quit his job to see a dream.

Floyd Mayweather is a sissy. Meanwhile, Yankee Stadium was home to boxing again.

Parting shot: Here's a classic. Dedicated to Walter Ray Allen.

Happy Memorial Day to all those who are celebrating the holiday!

Luckily, since my office is celebrating the holiday, I get the night off. A day free from stress and consternation. A day free from annoyances and disturbances.

I decided to do this a little earlier than usual time, given recent matters. Like the fact that I have a night life to attend to (finally) and I would like to leave the house and attend a #tweetup.

It has been a while since I have gotten the chance to go out and enjoy the night. Schedule has not been that cooperative and if something opens up, I feel exhausted.

People should take advantage of whatever breaks they have to see what is out there. After all, you live only once and instead of living in regret on missed opportunities, one should take advantage of it.

One thing I always wanted has been to go visit the provinces and partake of local tourism. Never really gone out (unless with family). The only time I managed to go out, it was to the former British Crown Colony a few years. I hope I can get the chance to seize this little possibility and grab it and fully abuse it.

Happy Memorial Day! Enjoy your BBQ!
Memorial Link love.

In the realm of tradition, Dario got milk. Meanwhile, thank goodness for car safety.

However, Penske denies Ganassi a Memorial Day double.

On the other side of the world, sometimes, the quest for personal gain can cost you the team goal.

Remember the time when the NBA buckled under player pressure with the ball? Will we see the same result in South Africa?

Stateside soccer warmup done. Off to South Africa they go under the leadership of Landon Donovan. Meanwhile, England beckons.

Coming soon to a Youtube near you. I liked this one back in the day (now being given a 2010 makeover).

Ping! 54 and counting.

After a Perfect Game the other day, a solid 14K gold performance was noted yesterday.

Speaking of Perfect Games, Doc Halladay was given a gift from the Marlins. And a day after the game, same score. Naturally, Dallas Braden has something to say.

Apprarently, Kendry's Bill Gramatica moment scarred Mike Scioscia. It spooked the Rangers, too. Well, so far so good for immediate impact. Does Carlos Delgado, Jermaine Dye or even Mike Lowell ring a bell?

Slump over, Albert?

Hedo, you could have been in Portland, you know. This one is definitely on you.

Quo vadis, STAT?

Here's a little tip: You want him, charm the other 3.

Kobe and Kill Bill. Analogy fits.

Here a profile on Mutant Russian Mark Cuban.

Let Shannon Brown wear green!

Another reason why I like the Rays.

Game 2 tonight. With ratings from Game 1 good.

RIP Scooter.

Finally a simple parting shot: Time for a Call to Arms.

World Cup Soccer Saturday

I watched on CNN that there was World Cup Qualification action yesterday all across the world.

With the new rule that only the hosts get automatic qualification (this case being South Africa), stakes get a little bit higher. Let's see where things place themselves.

CONMEBOL (South America): 4 automatic spots with 5th placer squaring off with 4th placer of CONCACAF.

Top Four: Brazil and Paraguay tied with 24 pts, Chile is 3rd and Argentina is 4th with 22.
5th Place: Uruguay is 5pts back from Argentina, with Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia at their heels.

Oceania: Due to its relative weakness vis-a-vis the other regions, the winner will have to face off with the 5th place team in Asia.

New Zealand won the group, so it will await its playoff opponent.

CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean): 3 automatic berths await the top 3 teams, with the 4th placed team facing off against the 5th placer of the CONMEBOL.

Top 3: Costa Rica and the US pacing the group, with El Salvador (5pts) holding on to 3rd place by 1 pt.
4th place: Honduras is barely holding on with 4 pts while still in contention for the final automatic spot. Chasing both teams are Mexico (3pts) and Trinidad and Tobago (2 pts).

AFC (Asia): 4 automatic spots will be awarded to the top two teams on each group, with the third-place squads squaring off to have the right to play the Oceania Zone Winner (New Zealand)

Group A: Japan and Australia are guaranteed automatic spots with 2 games to play. Bahrain (7pts) has a slight lead over Qatar (5pts) and Uzbekistan (4pts) for 3rd, but has a game in hand over both teams.

Group B: South Korea (14pts) has a slight edge over North Korea (11 pts) and Saudi Arabia (10 pts). Iran (7 pts) has an outside chance, but would need some help.

UEFA (Europe): All team subdivided into 9 groups, with group winners securing qualification. The 8 best 2nd place teams go into a home-and-home playoff, with the winners securing qualification.

Group 1: Denmark is pacing with 16 pts and Hungary attempting to restore its greatness from the early Fifties in second with 13 pts. Portugal is third with 9 pts, but Sweden has a game in hand and has 6 pts.

Group 2: Greece and Switzerland tied with 13 pts. Latvia is 3pts back and Israel, a pt behind Latvia.

Group 3: Slovakia (15pts) has a 2 pt lead over Northern Ireland with a game in hand. Poland is 3rd with 10 pts as the Czech Republic and Slovenia trail by 2 pts.

Group 4: Germany (16 pts) has a 4 pt lead over Russia and a 6 pt lead over Finland, but both trailing teams have a game in hand over the Germans. Wales has 9 pts, but has played 7 games already.

Group 5: Spain is looking good with 18 pts. The Euro Champs are leading Bosnia-Hercegovina by 6. Turkey is in far third with only 8 pts, a pt ahead of Belgium.

Group 6: England pacing the group with 18 pts, 5 ahead of Croatia. Belarus (9 pts) and Ukraine (8 pts) have a game ahead of the Croats.

Group 7: Serbia (15 pts) has a 5 pt edge over France but the French has a game in hand over the Serbs and two games in hand over Lithuania (9 pts). Romania and Austria have 7 pts each.

Group 8: Italy is leading Ireland by a point (14 to 13), but the defending champs have a game in hand. Bulgaria has 8 pts in third place.

Group 9: The Dutch looking to secure automatic qualification with 18 pts. Scotland is in far second with only 7.

Africa: 5 automatic spots will be rewarded to the 5 group winners. South Africa, being the host, already has secured an automatic spot. The current World Cup qualifying also serves as a qualifier for the African Cup of Nations.

NOTE: This is still early as teams have either gotten 1 or games so far in this double round robin format.

Group A: Gabon already has 6 pts. Togo has 3 pts, with Morocco and Cameroon still scoreless.

Group B: Tunisia has 6 pts, with Nigeria and Mozambique having a pt and Kenya still scoreless.

Group C: Zambia has 4 pts, with Egypt, Algeria and Rwanda each garnering a pt.

Group D: Ghana has 3 pts, with Mali and Sudan owning a pt. Benin still scoreless.

Group E: Burkina Faso has 6 pts, with Cote D'Ivoire 3 pts and both Guinea and Malawi still scoreless.
