On Thursday night (Friday morning), Derek Jeter is slated to play his final regular season game in Yankee Stadium. Although the Yankees have been officially eliminated from playoff contention, it will be a special and momentous occasion.
A week ago, Gatorade put out this ad, that clearly will make a tear go out of your eyes.
Of course, there is this one from Jordan, released back in the MLB All-Star Game
And then of course, MLB has their own tribute that they put out a couple of days ago.
Oyo Sports does it in its own style, memorializing those great Derek moments in those mini-figurines.
We're going to miss the Captain. Hopefully, the weather does enough and allow the game to be played.
Major League Soccer's dilemma has finally been solved.
The long drama on where the 20th MLS franchise finally ends, with the location most originally thought would be the prime place, as New York City has been named as the place where it will be based.
The intrigue isn't where it is going to be placed, but who has control over it.
The new franchise, entitled New York City FC, will be mainly owned by Manchester City. So yes, Sheikh Mansour and the ruling Emirati family that built themselves on petrodollars is controlling this operation. To help out with running the team, they enlisted the help of a local, that local being the New York Yankees, who in this working agreement with regards to NYCFC, will have Randy Levine as the head of the ownership group.
In other words, a Yankee operation with the Manchester City financial muscle that will start play in 2015.
Integrated within the deal for NYCFC will the eventual concept of having a stadium in New York City. There have been plans to have a soccer stadium in the Flushing Meadows area of Queens, but that does not preclude other possible sites within the five boroughs. Having the Yankees around certainly helps build a positive cache on the eventuality of having that stadium deal happening. And having them on board in the 2015 season, with the TV contracts ending in 2014 is an interesting ploy that possibly could benefit the league in the long run.
Manchester City, who finished second in the Premiership this just concluded season will be playing at Yankee Stadium this weekend against newly-minted UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea.
P.S. For those nostalgic about bringing back the New York Cosmos? Well, they will start play this August in the second-tier NASL.
The statistic that a journalist created in the 70s has said to be the most overrated one amongst all the different statistics being recorded in the national pastime. It changed the game from what it was back then, to what it is now with the specialization of the pitcher. Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated wrote about it.
His legend continues to grow, and it looks like he is not finished yet writing his epitaph.
Congratulations, Mariano. It is as if he needs this record to validate his greatness. Nope. He already has it way before he came close to 602.
Is it just me or I am the harbinger of reality for the Sparty and Friends community. A typhoon ravaging the countryside, not once, but twice. A third almost brushed us. Then, you know what I wrote last week. Rather not dwell on that one.
So, what should I write? Well, the other major collegiate league just wrapped their season last Saturday. The San Sebastian Golden Stags denied the San Beda Red Lions a chance at a fourth straight title in the NCAA. With that finally over, time to prepare for our own version of the NCAA Tournament, the PCCL.
I found some personal enjoyment watching / listening to U2 earlier today. How come? After all, I am in the 'burbs of Manila while they were at the Rose Bowl. I love Youtube. Youtube livestreamed the event online here. So the world managed to watch the event at the same time as those inside the home field of the UCLA Bruins. Very convenient since the concert was in the late morning / lunch time here.
Time for the Link-a-lot:
Sparty must be in a happy mood. I wonder why... (expect some major gloating later today). No shame to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They really gave it their all but in the end, Andy Pettite made his mark on the postseason, and possibly book his Hall of Fame induction. Btw, found it interesting that the honorary American League President (Jackie Autry of the Angels) awarding it to Hal Steinbrenner.
New BCS results out (because that is the only poll that matters, right?). If you are a Hawkeye and a Horned Frog, this is great news. You can discuss this further on the TWTWCFB. More stat goodness here.
SEC officiating cannot get a good break this year. Especially in games involving the Herban Jesus.
Talk about early entry. This is way too early, but at the same time, way too late. Someone has already tagged a team for him.
Speaking of Glazer and Kraft, their NFL teams went to London. How the Brits view the spectacle. Goodell likes them so much, he wants seconds. Oh, Tom Brady was great.
Steelers vs Vikings was amazing. Watching the highlights was amazing because the camera seemed to be rocking along with the stadium. AD, though, still deals hard hits that really hit hard.
