UAAP, NCAA revises schedule due to Papal visit

With the Papal visit coming next week, both the UAAP and NCAA each made the unilateral decision to not have events during the 15th to 19th, and in some cases, in the run-up to it.

Football is one of the events affected by the decision, with eight UAAP and at least six NCAA matches having to be postponed by the presence of Pope Francis.

With the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex as a police and military headquarters starting today, January 10, the City of Manila has declared the facility as off-limits. As a result, the NCAA has moved the remaining second round matches for its juniors and seniors matches at the said complex to January 21 to 23. If there is a need for a playoff, it has been scheduled to take place on the 26th.

The complete details on the revised NCAA football schedule can be read below.

Although the matches are taking place in Quezon City, the UAAP has also opted to shift the dates of its matches.

It has moved the January 15 matchup featuring National University against La Salle, and Ateneo against FEU to January 14, still at FEU-Diliman. ABS-CBN's Al Neri has confirmed that these two matches will be televised, although no specifics have yet been given pertaining to when they will be shown.

As for the matches that had been scheduled on January 18 and 19, they have been moved to January 21 and 22.

The women's matches have been converged as a doubleheader to take place on the 21st at the Moro Lorenzo Field inside Ateneo de Manila. UP will face La Salle at 1pm, followed by Ateneo versus FEU at 3pm.

The men's matches, on the other hand, will be played at FEU-Diliman. The 21st will have UE against NU at 1pm, followed by Adamson against Ateneo at 3pm. The 22nd will have UST and La Salle at 1pm, followed by UP against FEU at 3pm. No details have yet been revealed if these matches will be televised.

Meanwhile, UAAP football action resumes this weekend before the Papal break, with today's matches at the Moro Lorenzo Field. Kicking off the double-header is the women's match between defending champions FEU against their Season 75 finals opponents La Salle at 4pm. The second game sees UP attempt to take solo leadership in men's football against UE at 6pm.

Tomorrow will have its customary simultaneous games at FEU-Diliman and Moro Lorenzo. The latter will have the lone women's matchup between UST and current leaders UP at 1pm, followed by the highly anticipated rivalry between the men's football teams of Ateneo and La Salle at 3pm. The former, on the other hand, will have defending champions FEU against Adamson at 1pm, followed by UST against NU at 3pm.

The complete details on the revised UAAP collegiate schedule can be seen below.

As for the UAAP second round, it is scheduled to begin on January 24 and will last until February 22. The postseason takes place on March 1 and 8 and will be at Rizal Memorial.

As for the UAAP Juniors Football tournament, January 24 kicks off seven Saturday afternoons of high school football at FEU-Diliman, capped off by the title game on March 7. UST, La Salle-Zobel and Ateneo aim to knock off FEU off their title perch.

NCAA Season 89: Time to Shine on Aksyon

The 89th Season of the NCAA kicked off yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena, and it was shown on TV5's news and sports channel Aksyon TV (Ch. 41 on UHF free TV in Manila, Ch. 29 in Cebu and Davao, Skycable's Ch. 59, Destiny Cable's Ch. 78 and Cignal's Ch. 1, as well as on News5Everywhere via www.News5.com.ph), with replays to be shown on HYPER.

The theme for this season is "Our stars will SHINE in 89." According to DLSU-CSB President, Br. Dennis Magbanua, FSC, the theme aims to define the notion of a star as an individual grounded in integrity, honor and humility. The said star would enable others to shine, as well as guide and lead people towards their dreams and aspirations for the good of all.

This is the 2nd year that the NCAA will be shown under the auspices of Sports5, who are working on improving the signal and coverage in order for those in the provinces will be able to watch the channel properly. Games will be shown on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with 4pm and 6pm doubleheaders.

Just like last year, anchoring the coverage for Aksyon TV will be Aaron Atayde, Nikko Ramos and James Velasquez, while forming the pool of analysts are former PBA pros Dominic Uy and Boybits Victoria, current Global Port guard and Letran great Willie Miller, former CSB head coach Richard del Rosario, former San Beda head coach Ronnie Magsanoc, current Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio and Petron head coach (as of the moment) Olsen Racela. Sideline duties will be handled by Mara Aquino, Rizza Diaz and newly-minted Myx VJ Ai dela Cruz.

The opening game of the men's basketball season began with reigning champions San Beda needing an Art dela Cruz alley-oop to secure a one-point victory over hosts College of Saint Benilde, 71-70. The Red Lions are the clear favorites to defend their title this upcoming season, with new head coach Boyet Fernandez taking the helm.

Completing the doubleheader are losing finalists Letran repulsing San Sebastian, 74-69. Raymond Almazan scored 15 and grabbed 20 rebounds to impose his will down low for Caloy Garcia in his debut game replacing Louie Alas as the Knights' taskmaster.

New additions to spice up 7th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup

The 7th staging of the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup will have a new participant this year, as Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. champions Southwestern University will be joining the tournament as a guest team alongside the NCAA and UAAP teams that normally participate in this competition.

The Cobras made it to the Final Four of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League late last year, thanks mainly to the efforts of Ben Mbala. With the 6'7" center from Cameroon transferring to La Salle during the break, it is up to the 6'10" Siewe Armel to fill in those big shoes.

In addition to a new entrant in SWU, the cyclical nature of collegiate basketball ensures that new faces are produced yearly, who are tasked to replace the graduating players from the previous season. The Premier Cup was established to be a testbed for the different NCAA and UAAP schools to allow these new faces to jell before said leagues start their respective seasons.

These new faces include JJ Alejandro and Alfred Arogo for the reigning Premier Cup champions, National University, Kib Montalbo for La Salle, Joseph "Tata" Marata for the University of the Philippines, Rey Nambatac of Letran, Axel IƱigo of Adamson and Christopher Newsome for Ateneo.

For some schools like Far Eastern University and Letran, it is an opportunity for fans to get to see their new coaches at work, with Nash Racela and Caloy Garcia taking the reins of the Tamaraws and the Knights, respectively. In Caloy's case, it'll be familiar waters, as he previously held the reins for College of Saint Benilde during the mid-00s.

This will also be the scenario for the reigning champions of their respective leagues, as both Ateneo and San Beda will have new tacticians taking over the incumbent dynasties. Bo Perasol will have the unenviable task of replacing Norman Black at Loyola Heights, while Boyet Fernandez seeks to continue what Ronnie Magsanoc was able to accomplish in the lone year that he had at Mendiola.

On the other hand, making his return to San Sebastian is Topex Robinson, who left the program abruptly during the 88th season of the NCAA due to some issues with team management.

The 18 teams are divided into two groups, with Bracket A containing San Beda, University of Perpetual Help-Dalta System, National University, Far Eastern University, University of the Philippines, Arellano, College of Saint Benilde, Jose Rizal University, and Adamson. Bracket B, on the other hand, will have Ateneo de Manila, La Salle, University of Santo Tomas, University of the East, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum, Emilio Aguinaldo College, and Southwestern University.

The tournament is set to begin on April 13 at the Filoil Flying Arena in San Juan, with the quarterfinals to take place on June 3 and the finals on June 12.
